A 66-year-old Chicago man, Gerald Davis, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for attempting to kill another man with a samurai sword. The incident took place on March 12 in the 800 block of West 84th Street, where police found the 61-year-old victim bleeding from both hands, with some of his fingers missing. Davis was arrested at the scene after allegedly throwing the sword.
According to prosecutors, Davis got into an argument with the victim, punched him in the face, and then retrieved the sword from his car. He proceeded to strike the victim multiple times, severing some of his fingers and causing permanent nerve damage. Despite the victim’s pleas for mercy, Davis continued his violent assault.
Following a jury trial, Davis was convicted of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on October 9. Judge Ursula Walowski sentenced him to 28 years in prison, with a parole eligibility of 85%. Davis is expected to be paroled in December 2047, at the age of 89. His attorneys have filed an appeal against the sentence.
Davis has a criminal history that includes convictions for attempted arson, battery, and criminal sexual abuse. The state sex offender registry indicates that Davis committed a sex crime when he was 42, with a victim who was only seven years old at the time.
