Husqvarna Partners with International Organisations in a Bold Initiative to Restore Vital Ecosystems
Kenya’s mangrove forests play a crucial role in combating climate change, serving as breeding grounds for marine life, protecting the coastline, and storing carbon. However, these ecosystems have suffered degradation due to various factors, threatening biodiversity and coastal communities.
An ambitious environmental restoration project is underway along Kenya’s coast and in select inland areas. The Kenyan Mangrove Restoration Projects, a collaboration between Husqvarna, veritree, and Earthlungs, aims to plant over 300,000 mangrove trees to rejuvenate the country’s mangrove ecosystems.
Jonas Willaredt, Vice President of Sustainability Affairs at Husqvarna, emphasizes the importance of collective action in wetland conservation. He highlights the progress of the projects on World Wetlands Day, noting that over 400,000 trees have been secured for planting.
The restoration efforts will bring environmental benefits such as biodiversity revitalization, climate change adaptation, and erosion prevention. Additionally, the project will have a positive impact on local communities by providing sustainable livelihoods and creating additional income streams through revived fishing grounds.
Derrick Emsley, CEO of veritree, praises Husqvarna’s commitment to the project, stating that it is planting hope in addition to trees. The involvement of local communities in tree planting empowers them to take an active role in environmental restoration.
Flora Awiro, COO of Earthlungs Reforestation, echoes the sentiment, emphasizing the long-term impact of the projects. With Husqvarna’s support, efforts to enhance tree cover and restore the ecosystem can be scaled up for lasting positive change.
The Kenyan Mangrove Restoration Projects align with Husqvarna’s sustainability goals, contributing to green space preservation and biodiversity support. By partnering with veritree and Earthlungs, Husqvarna is not only restoring vital ecosystems but also empowering local communities.
Tracking the progress of the projects is made transparent through veritree’s monitoring system. For more information on Husqvarna’s sustainability initiatives, visit their website.
