Chicago police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect believed to be responsible for the murder of Alonzo “Zo” Smith in South Shore earlier this month. The tragic incident took place in the 7800 block of South Merrill in the early hours of June 3. Witnesses reported hearing a heated argument between two men, followed by gunshots and a heartbreaking plea of “Why you gotta shoot?”

Smith, a 58-year-old resident of the area, was found lying in the front yard of a nearby home with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Described as a good man who was well-loved by the community, his senseless death has left many mourning his loss. One woman expressed her grief, saying, “He watched me grow up. We loved him, he will be missed.”

In an effort to track down the perpetrator, the Chicago Police Department has released high-quality surveillance images and video of a man they believe to be connected to the murder. The footage, captured by CTA cameras at the 79th Street and Roosevelt Red Line stations, shows the suspect changing into dark clothing and boarding a CTA bus.

Area Two detectives are leading the investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Those who may have helpful details are encouraged to contact the authorities at 312-747-8271 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com, referencing case number JJ279248.

The tragic loss of Alonzo “Zo” Smith serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence plaguing communities in Chicago. As the search for justice continues, it is essential for the community to come together and support efforts to bring closure to this devastating crime.
