Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has provided an update on Kylian Mbappe’s fitness ahead of the Club World Cup quarter-final showdown against Borussia Dortmund. Although Mbappe is feeling better after his stomach illness kept him out of the group stage matches, Alonso has yet to confirm whether the French star will be in the starting lineup.

In Mbappe’s absence, Gonzalo Garcia has impressed, scoring three goals in Madrid’s previous games. Alonso mentioned that Mbappe and Garcia could potentially play together, depending on the game’s requirements. The final decision will be made on the morning of the match, as Alonso prefers to inform his players before revealing tactical decisions.

Rodrygo, the Brazilian winger, has struggled for form and playing time during the tournament. However, Alonso assured that Rodrygo remains motivated and ready to contribute when called upon.

On the other hand, young Turkish midfielder Arda Guler has caught Alonso’s attention with his promising performances. Despite limited opportunities last season, Guler is set for further development under Alonso’s guidance.

The upcoming fixture at the MetLife Stadium will see a rematch of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, where Madrid emerged victorious over Dortmund. Dortmund’s head coach, Niko Kovac, acknowledged the challenge but expressed confidence in his team’s familiarity with Alonso’s coaching style.

Kovac highlighted the similarities between Madrid’s current system and the one implemented by Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Despite facing a tough opponent, Dortmund is determined to progress in the competition, drawing inspiration from Fluminense’s surprising run to the semi-finals.

After a goalless draw in their opening game, Dortmund is looking to replicate Fluminense’s success and advance further in the tournament. Kovac emphasized the intensity and passion of the Club World Cup, believing that Dortmund has what it takes to make a significant impact.

As the anticipation builds for the quarter-final clash, both Madrid and Dortmund are gearing up for a thrilling encounter that could potentially shape their journey in the competition. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting matchup.
