The Omega gym in Rome has always been a popular spot for residents of the upscale Prati district, as well as for priests, nuns, and monsignors from the nearby Vatican City. Little did they know that among their regular patrons was the man who would eventually become Pope.

Robert Prevost, who came to the Vatican from Peru in 2023 to lead the office responsible for vetting bishop nominations worldwide, was a familiar face at Omega. It was only recently, when he was elected as Pope Leo XIV, that the gym staff and members realized who he truly was. The owner of Omega, Francesco Tamburlani, shared his joy upon learning the news, recounting how Prevost’s election as pope was a pleasant surprise for everyone at the gym.

Despite being 69 years old, Prevost was known for his commitment to staying fit. His personal trainer, Valerio Masella, revealed that Prevost’s workout routine was more akin to that of men in their 50s. Training two to three times a week for up to an hour, Prevost focused on improving his posture and cardiovascular capacity rather than lifting weights.

Masella described Prevost’s workout sessions as intense, with a particular emphasis on cardio exercises like running on the treadmill and cycling. The cardinal’s positive attitude and dedication to his fitness regimen impressed Masella, who never knew Prevost’s true identity until his papal election.

Sporting prowess is not uncommon among popes, with Pope John Paul II known for his love of skiing and mountain trekking. Prevost, on the other hand, is a tennis enthusiast and recently had the opportunity to meet top-ranked player Jannik Sinner. Despite his busy schedule as pope, Prevost expressed interest in playing a charity match suggested by a journalist.

While his new role as pope may limit his time for tennis, Tamburlani assured Prevost that he is always welcome to return to Omega for a workout. The gym owner expressed his willingness to accommodate the Holy Father and ensure his safety and privacy during his visits.

In conclusion, the unexpected journey of Robert Prevost from a regular gym-goer to the Pope Leo XIV is a testament to his dedication to fitness and positive attitude. As he embraces his new role, Prevost’s commitment to staying healthy and active serves as an inspiration to many.
