Police Thwart Armed Robbery Attempt at MRB Rural Bank in Winneba
Law enforcement officers successfully prevented an armed robbery at the MRB Rural Bank in Winneba in the early hours of Friday, August 15th, thanks to a prompt response to a security alarm.
Upon arrival at the bank, a patrol unit encountered suspects attempting to break into the vault. The officers faced gunfire from the criminals but managed to deter them from carrying out their intended crime.
Despite the brief exchange of shots, no individuals were harmed during the incident. The perpetrators fled the scene, leaving behind incriminating evidence such as a pump-action shotgun, an expended cartridge, and various tools used for the attempted robbery.
In a coordinated effort, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) from Accra, headed by ASP James Atampugri, joined forces with local authorities to investigate the thwarted heist. Initial reports suggest that five armed individuals were involved in the foiled robbery.
Authorities have noted similarities between this incident and previous attacks on rural banks in the area, indicating a possible connection to a known criminal group. The investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects responsible for the failed robbery attempt.
