Ghanaian Police Arrest Seven Suspects in Fuel Tanker Hijacking
A recent incident in Ghana has led to the arrest of seven suspects involved in the armed hijacking of a fuel tanker carrying 5,400 litres near Suhum in the Eastern Region. The daring robbery took place on August 6 at Teacher Mante, where attackers intercepted the tanker (GT 2493-20) using a green pickup truck.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, spokesperson for the Accra Regional Police, stated that the assailants handcuffed the driver and assistant of the tanker, forcing them into their pickup before driving away with the stolen tanker.
Following a police chase, the pickup was intercepted in Accra the next day, leading to the rescue of the captives and the arrest of suspect Christian Bortey Bernard.
Further investigations led to the apprehension of six additional suspects at a fuel station near Bunso: Mark Abito (34), Shaibu Adams (27), Awini Ibrahim (25), Muniru Ayeba (19), Barnabas Atiga (26), and Abdullah Ganiu (32). Recovered items included the hijacked tankers, a pumping machine, and a golf cart.
The suspects are currently in custody as the investigation continues. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities promptly, emphasizing their commitment to prosecuting fuel theft gangs to the fullest extent of the law. This operation reflects the increasing efforts of the police to combat organized highway robberies targeting fuel shipments.
