Patients lives at risk as doctors refuse to work extra overtime without pay

South Africa’s public health system is facing a crisis as doctors refuse to work additional overtime without compensation. This issue came to a head recently at Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Hospital in Mbizana, Eastern Cape, where patients were left without doctors on call due to a shortage of medical staff.

A document circulating on social media, purportedly from the hospital CEO, informed patients that there would be days with no doctors on call starting from January 20th, 2025. While the Eastern Cape health department denies this claim, a hospital staff member shared the call roster showing a lack of doctors on call for several days.

One doctor working at the hospital explained that the staff of 16 doctors is insufficient, and no one is willing to work extra hours without proper compensation. This issue is not new, as doctors across various provinces have been facing changes to their working hours and overtime policies, leading to frustration among healthcare workers.

The combination of budget constraints, staff shortages, and new overtime policies is putting patients at risk, especially during emergencies. With no adjustments to the health budget announced last year, medical unions have warned of a looming shortage of doctors, which could compromise patient care.
