NSMQ 2025: Mankessim SHTS pulls off shocking final-round win over Assin State College in Central Regional qualifiers

The 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) Central Regional qualifiers commenced with a bang, as Mankessim Secondary Technical School made history by securing the top spot for the first time ever. The competition, held at the SGS Auditorium on the University of Cape Coast campus, saw five schools vying for a chance to progress to the next round.

Despite initially trailing in second place for the first three rounds, Mankessim SHTS staged an impressive comeback in the final round, narrowly edging past Assin State College by a 2-point margin. The atmosphere was tense as both teams battled it out, with Mankessim SHTS setting the tone early on by answering major questions and capitalizing on bonus opportunities. However, Assin State College put up a strong fight and dominated the initial rounds.

In round one, Assin State College took the lead with 27 points, leaving Mankessim SHTS trailing behind with 22 points. Gomoa Gyaman SHS, Komenda SHTS, and Oguaa SHTS followed with 3, 12, and 11 points respectively. The speed race in round two saw Assin State College maintaining their lead with 37 points, while Mankessim SHTS closely followed with 33 points.

The true-or-false round saw Assin State College holding onto their lead with 45 points, with Mankessim SHTS hot on their heels at 40 points. Komenda SHTS, Oguaa SHTS, and Gomoa Gyaman SHS struggled to keep up with 19, 17, and 13 points respectively. However, the final riddle round turned the tables as Mankessim SHTS answered two riddles correctly, shocking the audience and securing a thrilling 2-point lead over Assin State College.

As the Central Regional qualifiers unfold, more than 40 schools are competing for the title of regional champions. With surprises already in store and tensions running high, this year’s NSMQ qualifiers are shaping up to be unpredictable and exciting. Stay tuned for more updates as the competition progresses.
