The aftermath of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana has been marred by alleged attacks on Members of Parliament belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in disputed constituencies. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader and MP for Effutu, has raised concerns over these attacks, which he claims are orchestrated by candidates of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in an attempt to influence the election outcomes.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted several constituencies where these attacks have taken place, including Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, and Techiman South. He expressed worry over the safety of NPP MPs in these areas, revealing that some have been forced to flee their homes due to the threats they have received.
In a press conference held on 11th December, Afenyo-Markin recounted specific incidents of violence, such as the siege on the parliamentary candidate in Ablekuma North, Madame Ekua Afriyie, who was targeted by individuals seeking to destroy election materials. He also mentioned the threats faced by Patrick Boamah and other party officials, urging the NDC’s Leader and President-elect, John Mahama, to intervene and rein in his supporters.
The Effutu MP called on Mahama to take action and stop the violence, emphasizing that such attacks undermine the democratic process and endanger the lives of elected representatives. He further appealed to stakeholders, including civil society organizations and the National Peace Council, to intervene and restore peace in the affected constituencies.
In response to the allegations, President-elect John Mahama condemned the attacks and vandalism of state properties, calling on the police and President Akufo-Addo to take decisive action to address the situation. The escalating tensions between NPP and NDC supporters have raised concerns about the future of democracy in Ghana, with calls for immediate intervention to prevent further violence and ensure a peaceful resolution to the post-election disputes.
