The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for Nintendo fans, myself included. With the unveiling of the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on April 2, there has been a wave of excitement surrounding the new console. However, despite the initial reveal and subsequent Nintendo Direct, there were still many unanswered questions about the Switch 2.
I had the opportunity to attend the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience in London to get hands-on with the console and uncover more details about its features and capabilities. Here’s what I discovered during my time with the Switch 2.
### Toughened up
One notable improvement with the Switch 2 is its durability. The new 7.9-inch screen cover feels more robust, with a glass-like texture similar to the Switch OLED. However, I did notice some minor scratches on the units at the event, indicating the need for a screen protector to prevent damage.
The overall build of the Switch 2 seems sturdier, with additional ports and cooling outlets. The game card slot cover has been reinforced, and the kickstand has been upgraded to a more reliable design. Despite being heavier than previous models, the Switch 2 still feels comfortable to hold for extended periods.
### Eye candy
While the Switch 2 has reverted to an LCD panel, the display quality is impressive. The HDR capabilities offer vibrant colors and sharp visuals, although it lacks the deep blacks of OLED. The screen also appears to be laminated, reducing reflectivity and enhancing clarity.
### Rails or magnets?
The new Joy-Con 2 controllers on the Switch 2 feature a magnetic attachment system, providing a secure connection without the need for rails. While the controllers offer improved ergonomics and functionality, there is still some wiggle when attached, which may affect the overall feel of the system.
### Picking for performance
During the hands-on experience, I had the chance to play various games on the Switch 2, with Mario Kart World standing out as a showcase title for the console. The game offers a high-fidelity experience with smooth gameplay and stunning visuals. Other titles like Metroid Prime 4 and Donkey Kong Bananza also impressed with their graphics and gameplay mechanics.
### Controller comforts
The Switch 2 introduces Mouse Mode, allowing for precise aiming and unique gameplay experiences. While the Joy-Con 2 controllers offer versatility, some users may find them uncomfortable for extended use. Accessories like grip cases can enhance the ergonomics of the controllers.
A new Pro Controller and GameCube controller were also showcased, providing alternative control options for players. The Pro Controller offers integrated audio and a new ‘C’ button for the Switch 2’s GameChat feature, while the GameCube controller remains true to its original design with added functionality.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in select markets on June 5, offering a range of improvements and new features for gaming enthusiasts.
