Ghana’s New Ambassador to the US Calls for Professionalism and Integrity
Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador to the United States, Emmanuel Victor Smith, has emphasized the importance of professionalism and diligence among staff at the Embassy in Washington, D.C. He urged them to work diligently to protect the country’s international image.
Addressing the staff at a welcome reception at his official residence, Ambassador Smith highlighted the significance of maintaining conduct that reflects positively on Ghana. “My goal is to make Ghana look good,” he stated, encouraging the team to remain hopeful and not give up.
He commended the embassy’s leadership for successfully managing recent restructuring efforts and called for continued resilience and unity. Ambassador Smith stressed the need to uphold high standards of performance and avoid actions that could potentially tarnish Ghana’s reputation.
Deputy Head of Mission, Ambassador Mrs. Jane Gasu Aheto, welcomed Ambassador Smith on behalf of the staff, expressing optimism for a strong working relationship based on collaboration and mutual understanding. She emphasized the importance of presenting a united front to address critical issues and promote Ghana’s interests in the U.S.
Upon his arrival in Washington with his family, Ambassador Smith was warmly received by the diplomatic team. He has pledged to prioritize teamwork and integrity throughout his tenure to ensure the embassy operates effectively.
Recent reports of corruption at the Washington mission, where an IT officer diverted visa applicants to a private company for personal gain, have prompted action from Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Dismissals, a forensic audit, and restructuring have been ordered to address the issue, underscoring the importance of maintaining integrity at the embassy.
