The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently unveiled its ‘Renewable Energy Opportunities Report for Namibia’ during the Africa Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2024 conference. This report delves into the potential for renewable energy in Namibia and how it can align with the country’s development goals. The implementation of solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects not only promises to reduce Namibia’s exorbitant electricity costs, the highest in Southern Africa, but also aims to decrease its reliance on energy imports while bolstering energy security.

Currently, Namibia imports a significant portion of its baseload, amounting to 60% to 70% of the total. Shockingly, around 45% of the population still lacks access to electricity. Tom Alweendo, Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, emphasized the importance of a decentralized energy approach to address this energy disparity, especially in underserved rural communities.

This groundbreaking report, tailored specifically for Namibia, marks a pivotal moment in the country’s renewable energy trajectory. Alweendo stressed the significance of leveraging global expertise and local insights to drive policy decisions and industry strategies. With a robust renewable energy framework in place, Namibia is poised to capitalize on its abundant solar and wind resources, aiming to achieve a remarkable 70% renewable energy target by 2030.

Moreover, Namibia has set its sights on becoming a frontrunner in green hydrogen production, capitalizing on its exceptional renewable resources. Mary Burce Warlick, IEA Deputy Executive Director, commended Namibia’s ambitious green hydrogen strategy, noting the potential for competitive renewable hydrogen production given the country’s favorable conditions.

Incorporating renewable energy into Namibia’s mining sector, a key contributor to the GDP, presents a golden opportunity to enhance competitiveness in global markets. By integrating wind and solar energy into mining operations, Namibia can slash operational costs, reduce emissions, and elevate the attractiveness of its products on the global stage.

Alweendo affirmed Namibia’s unwavering commitment to renewable energy, underpinned by data-driven policies that prioritize the needs of the populace. The country’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions not only positions it as a regional leader but also opens doors for clean energy exports on a global scale.

In conclusion, Namibia’s renewable energy journey holds immense promise for economic growth, energy security, and environmental sustainability. By harnessing its renewable potential and leveraging strategic partnerships, Namibia is poised to emerge as a beacon of renewable energy excellence in Africa and beyond.
