The eThekwini Municipality in Durban has taken the precautionary measure of temporarily closing Umhlanga Main Beach and Bronze Beach after the discovery of unidentified “balls” mixed with the beach sand. Speculation arose that these balls could potentially be human or animal faeces after a video circulated on social media showing the unusual objects, with one beachgoer likening them to dog faeces.
The municipality has urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information. Samples of the mysterious balls have been collected and are currently undergoing testing by the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit along with scientists from the Scientific Services division.
Despite media reports suggesting that the balls appear to be human waste and linking the discovery to previous beach closures due to high E. coli levels, the city has emphasized that such claims are premature and irresponsible. The municipality remains committed to transparency regarding water quality issues and is actively working to determine the source of the peculiar objects.
While Durban beaches have a history of closures due to high levels of E. coli, the presence of potential poop balls is a new and concerning development. The city has not disclosed the quantity of balls that were found, and beachgoers are advised to avoid the affected areas until further notice.
In the meantime, the municipality continues to investigate the matter to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors. Stay tuned for updates as the investigation unfolds.
