The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in various industries has been on the rise, prompting questions about whether it is becoming the new norm. Recently, a woman from Perth shared her experience on social media after witnessing her doctor utilize ChatGPT during her appointment. She expressed shock and concern as her doctor inputted her information into the AI tool to seek advice on her next steps. This incident left her feeling like she was being treated by an incompetent and lazy healthcare provider, raising ethical and professional boundaries.

The woman recounted how her doctor entered her blood test results and age into ChatGPT, resulting in a list of recommendations for her treatment plan. While it is common for doctors to refer to online resources like Google or medical journals during consultations, using AI in this manner seemed to cross a line for her. She expressed her doubts about the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated medical advice and questioned if others have had similar experiences with their healthcare providers.

Following the unsettling encounter, the woman reached out to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and planned to file a complaint with the Health and Disability Services Complaints Office. The incident sparked a debate among online commenters about the appropriateness of AI in medical settings.

In response to the controversy, Dr. Sam Hay, an Australian GP, shared his perspective on the use of AI in healthcare. He acknowledged that AI tools can be valuable resources for physicians when used judiciously. Dr. Hay emphasized the importance of healthcare professionals relying on reputable sources and exercising critical judgment when incorporating AI-generated suggestions into patient care.

While AI technology like ChatGPT can provide guidance and assist in decision-making, Dr. Hay highlighted the necessity of clinical assessment and interpretation by healthcare providers. He stressed the significance of patients establishing trust with their doctors and ensuring that AI tools are utilized responsibly to enhance, rather than replace, medical expertise.

In conclusion, the integration of AI in healthcare presents both opportunities and challenges. As technology continues to advance, maintaining a balance between innovation and traditional medical practices is crucial to delivering high-quality patient care. Patients are advised to communicate openly with their healthcare providers and seek clarification on the use of AI tools to ensure their well-being is prioritized.
