Muhsin Hendricks, a 58-year-old gay imam from Cape Town, was tragically gunned down in Gqeberha just hours before he was set to marry a lesbian couple. The shocking incident has left the LGBTQIA+ community reeling, with police now on the hunt for two suspects involved in the senseless murder.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the incident took place at Haley Place, Extension 24, Bethelsdorp. Hendricks, along with a driver, was inside a vehicle when two unknown suspects with covered faces pulled up in a silver-coloured Hilux double cab and opened fire, killing him on the spot. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) World has condemned the killing, describing Hendricks as a well-respected activist and religious figure within the LGBTQIA+ community. Hendricks, who made history by becoming the first openly gay imam in the world in 1996, was known for his work in providing support and guidance to queer Muslims struggling with their faith and identity.
OUT LGBT Well-Being, another organization dedicated to LGBTQIA+ rights, expressed horror at the assassination of Hendricks, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability in cases of violence against vulnerable community members. The Democratic Alliance (DA) Cape Town Regional Committee also denounced the murder, calling it a hate crime that reflects the ongoing discrimination and violence faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in South Africa and beyond.
Hendricks’ legacy as a trailblazing advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusivity in religious spaces will not be forgotten. As the founder of The Inner Circle and the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation in Cape Town, he leaves behind a lasting impact on the intersection of faith, sexuality, and social justice. Despite facing threats and challenges throughout his life, Hendricks remained steadfast in his commitment to creating safe and affirming spaces for marginalized communities.
The loss of Muhsin Hendricks is a devastating blow to the LGBTQIA+ community, but his memory will continue to inspire and guide those fighting for equality and acceptance. As authorities work to uncover the truth behind his senseless murder, it is crucial that we stand together in solidarity against hate and violence towards all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
