MTN Group teams up with Synamedia to launch a groundbreaking streaming platform for African subscribers

  • MTN Group partners with UK’s Synamedia to launch a new streaming platform for African mobile and fibre subscribers.
  • The service will offer linear TV and video-on-demand content, utilising diverse monetisation models.
  • The initiative aims to enhance digital content accessibility and drive digital inclusion across Africa.

MTN Group, a prominent mobile network operator in Africa, has forged a strategic alliance with Synamedia, a UK-based video software provider, to introduce a cutting-edge streaming platform tailored for both mobile and fixed broadband subscribers throughout the continent. Through this collaboration, MTN seeks to improve digital content accessibility and cater to the evolving preferences of African audiences.

“We recognize a distinctive opportunity to revolutionize video consumption in Africa by offering high-quality, accessible, and relevant content,” remarked Selorm Adadevoh, Group Chief Commercial Officer at MTN Group. “This partnership empowers us to leverage state-of-the-art technology and profound customer insights to enrich entertainment experiences and promote digital inclusion.”

By venturing into the streaming market, MTN will confront established streaming giants such as Netflix, Showmax, Multichoice, and Prime Video. The new streaming platform, powered by Synamedia’s advanced cloud-based technologies, will provide linear television and video-on-demand content. It is engineered to support a variety of monetisation models, including subscriptions, ad-supported content, and free streaming channels with targeted advertising.

The platform will feature locally adapted content curated based on a content strategy that resonates with local cultures, languages, and viewing habits in each market. This approach ensures that viewers across the continent connect with the offerings on a personal level.

“Thanks to MTN’s leadership and innovation, smartphone users across Africa will have access to innovative linear TV and on-demand video content,” stated Paul Segre, CEO of Synamedia. “By leveraging the breadth of our integrated, cloud-based portfolio to swiftly deploy new services at scale, MTN will pioneer a revolutionary set of offerings that drive new revenues for customers and viewers alike.”
