An 18-year-old Venezuelan migrant, Roymer Barrios-Marquez, along with two juveniles, are facing charges in connection with a robbery that took place last week in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on May 19, 2025, in the 5700 block of South Kimbark Avenue. Barrios-Marquez and the juveniles allegedly confronted two boys, ages 13 and 16.
“Stop, give me your stuff,” Barrios-Marquez demanded, indicating that he had a knife. Prosecutors mentioned that he had an object resembling a knife visible in his front pants pocket. The juveniles also made threatening gestures, with one placing a hand in a backpack and suggesting they were armed. They threatened to shoot the victims if they tried to escape.
The victims complied and handed over several items, including an iPhone, ski mask, Nike hoodie, silver necklace, ring, Air Jordan shoes, backpack, and jacket, as reported by Chicago police. When Barrios-Marquez was arrested, he was found in possession of one victim’s phone. Both victims identified him and the two juveniles as the perpetrators of the robbery. A fourth suspect managed to escape with most of the stolen items, according to the police report.
During a court hearing, Judge Deidre Dyer ordered Barrios-Marquez to be detained, describing the robbery as “opportunistic and egregious.” Barrios-Marquez is facing two counts of aggravated robbery.
