Empowering Women for a Sustainable Future in the East African Community

On this International Women’s Day 2025, we celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of women in shaping our societies, economies, and governance structures across the East African Community (EAC) region and beyond. The theme for this year, “Championing Gender Equity and Empowerment: Women as Builders of a Sustainable Future,” emphasizes the crucial role women play in driving development and prosperity in East Africa.

Despite the progress made, gender inequalities continue to present challenges, underscoring the need for accelerated action towards achieving gender parity. The EAC remains dedicated to advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality, guided by the EAC Treaty, the EAC Gender Policy (2018), and regional commitments aimed at ensuring women have equal opportunities to thrive in all sectors.

Through various policies and programs, the EAC is working to enhance women’s participation in trade, leadership, peacebuilding, and decision-making processes. The collective efforts of governments, private sector, civil society, youth, and male allies are essential in addressing barriers to women’s progress and ensuring the full implementation of gender-responsive policies.

This year’s International Women’s Day holds special significance as it marks the first time the EAC is observing the occasion under the leadership of a woman, with a Partner State also being led by a woman. This milestone reflects the progress towards gender equality in the region and underscores the importance of sustaining this momentum for future generations.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, let us all commit to being champions of change and working together to build an East Africa where women and girls can achieve their full potential. Empowering women is not just a moral imperative but a strategic one for building a more inclusive and prosperous society for all.
