Meet the 2025 Award Winners

The 16th Durban FilmMart concluded its successful run on 21 July, with the 2025 DFM Awards ceremony honoring the best in African cinema. The event, which attracted 1,364 film professionals from 63 countries, revolved around the theme “Bridges Not Borders: Stories That Unite.”

This year’s award winners were announced across various categories, highlighting exceptional projects in development and showcasing the emerging talent in African filmmaking. The event culminated in the presentation of 39 awards, totaling over R1.5 million in cash prizes and grants.

Among the notable winners were “The Second Coming” from South Africa, which took home the Best Fiction award along with a grant of R100,000. The film, produced by Siyabonga Xaba and directed by Michael James, impressed the judges with its storytelling and craftsmanship.

Another standout project was “The Salt of the South” from Tunisia, which won the Best Non-Fiction award and a grant of R100,000. Produced by Ramzi Laâmouri and directed by Rami Jarboui, the documentary captivated audiences with its compelling narrative and visual style.

In the animation category, “Crocodile Dance” from South Africa and Nigeria stood out, earning a grant of R100,000. Produced by Ingrid de Beer and directed by Shofela Coker and Nadia Darries, the film wowed the judges with its creativity and artistry.

The event also saw the presentation of several special awards, including the Red Sea Film Fund Award, the Al Jazeera Co-production Award, and the MTN Group Digital Award, among others. These awards recognized outstanding projects and provided financial support to help bring these stories to life.

Overall, the 16th Durban FilmMart was a resounding success, celebrating the diversity and talent of African cinema. The event not only showcased the best in filmmaking but also fostered collaboration and networking among industry professionals. With its focus on unity and storytelling, the Durban FilmMart continues to be a vital platform for African filmmakers to share their stories with the world.
