Nasiphi Moya and Dada Morero held a press conference at Tshwane House to reveal details about the upcoming Africa Mayors Assembly and U20 Sherpa Meeting scheduled to take place at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Tshwane.
Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero and Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya dismissed rumors about Helen Zille, the Democratic Alliance (DA) federal chairperson, being considered for the position of Johannesburg mayor in the 2026 local government elections.
Speculations arose that some DA members have encouraged Zille to put herself forward for the role on the party’s internal leadership list.
Zille announced the opening of applications for mayoral candidates in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, and Mangaung in March, with the application window closing by the end of the month.
In her statement, Zille emphasized the party’s quest for the best candidates to tackle corruption and service delivery challenges in these metros.
While it remains unknown if Zille applied for any positions, Morero hinted that her potential inclusion on the list for Johannesburg mayor could signify the DA’s recognition of the party’s shortcomings in the region.
Moya and her deputy, Eugene Modise, viewed Zille’s consideration as a reflection of the DA’s lack of confidence in its current leadership in Johannesburg and Gauteng.
Recently, Morero introduced a team, dubbed the “bomb squad,” to address issues in Johannesburg and ensure efficient service delivery to residents.
Meanwhile, the DA in Johannesburg submitted motions of no confidence in Morero and the speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu, citing governance issues and the need for effective leadership in the city.
At the press briefing, Morero highlighted the stability of coalitions in Tshwane and Johannesburg, acknowledging the existing challenges in Johannesburg and the ongoing efforts to address them.
