Man Charged with Shooting Passenger Aboard Green Line Train in Chicago Loop
Chicago prosecutors have filed charges against Sterling Sawyer, 43, for shooting a passenger aboard a Green Line train in the Loop on Christmas Eve. Sawyer, who is currently detained pending trial, exhibited disruptive behavior during a recent court hearing, according to the presiding judge.
According to prosecutors, the incident took place around 9:35 p.m. when Sawyer and the 35-year-old victim boarded the same train car at Washington and Wabash. An argument ensued between the two individuals, leading to Sawyer allegedly pulling out a gun, shooting the victim, and fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage from CTA cameras captured the shooting, which authorities confirmed occurred at the Clark-Lake station.
Judge David Kelly cited concerns about Sawyer’s lack of control over his anger and impulses as a factor in his decision to detain him. Sawyer faces charges of aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His criminal record includes prior convictions for manufacturing and delivering heroin, as well as attempted arson.
