Arrest Made in Red Line Robberies
Chicago authorities have apprehended one of the four individuals involved in a series of robberies on the Red Line in December. The suspect, Jemaal Muhammad, 20, hailing from DeKalb, has been charged with three counts of robbery following his arrest on South State Street on Tuesday. Muhammad’s arrest coincided with the release of surveillance images by mass transit detectives seeking assistance in identifying the perpetrators.
According to Chicago Police Department reports, Muhammad was part of a group that targeted a 15-year-old boy on a train near 95th Street and a 44-year-old man on a train near 79th Street on December 29. Additionally, the group is believed to be connected to another robbery near the Cermak Red Line station on December 20, although Muhammad is not currently charged in that particular incident.
Muhammad is set to appear in court for a detention hearing on Thursday. His criminal history includes a conviction for aggravated robbery at the Roosevelt CTA station in the Loop in June 2022. Despite receiving a three-year sentence in March 2023, Muhammad did not serve any time in prison due to credit for time spent in county jail and standard good behavior credits.
Furthermore, court records indicate that Muhammad faces a pending misdemeanor case for allegedly carrying a knife in the 7900 block of South Lafayette on December 11.
