President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Prof Enyonam Yao Kwawukume as the new Board Chairman of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS). This announcement was made during the inauguration of various Boards of important health institutions in the country, highlighting Prof Kwawukume’s significant role in leading the nation’s premier institution for postgraduate medical education.
With a wealth of experience in clinical practice, medical education, and healthcare leadership, Prof Kwawukume is a highly respected figure in the medical field. He is the Founder and Vice Chancellor of Family Health University and the Founder of Family Health Hospital. Additionally, he has held the prestigious K.K. Bensti-Enchill Chair at the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences.
During his speech at the inauguration, Prof Kwawukume emphasized the challenges facing the healthcare system in Ghana and the need for urgent and coordinated efforts to address these issues. He expressed his commitment, along with his colleagues, to tackle these challenges head-on and foster a collaborative approach to improve the healthcare sector.
Prof Kwawukume also highlighted the presence of experienced professionals within Ghana’s healthcare system, expressing optimism about the sector’s prospects. He emphasized the importance of taking action over rhetoric, stating that now is the time for concrete steps to address the pressing issues in the healthcare system.
As a trailblazer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Prof. Kwawukume is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work, including performing the world’s first bloodless myomectomy during a Caesarean section using a tourniquet. He is also the co-inventor of the Medical Eligibility Criteria Wheel for Reproductive Health and Family Planning, a tool adopted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and used globally.
Prof Kwawukume’s previous roles include Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at Korle Bu and leadership positions in professional bodies such as the West African College of Surgeons (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Ghana (SOGOG). In recognition of his contributions to women’s health globally, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG).
