Residents of Mahonisi Waterval village in Elim, in Limpopo’s Vhembe District Municipality, have been grappling with sewage leaks for 15 years. Rhulani Chavalala, a community leader and member of the African People’s Convention (APC), sheds light on this longstanding issue.

Chavalala expresses his frustration by stating, “Since 2009, this sewage has not been repaired. Councillors have come and gone, but no one seems to care about the sewage problem.” Despite numerous letters written by residents over the past decade, the municipality has failed to address the issue, leaving residents feeling neglected and unheard.

Nkhensani Chauke, a resident of Mahonisi Block B, shares her dismay over the lack of action from local authorities. She laments, “The councillor and municipality have done nothing to assist us. We feel helpless and ignored. The sewage even seeps into our homes, making us feel like animals.”

The impact of the sewage spillage extends beyond the residents to local businesses. A businessman, who prefers to remain anonymous, reveals that his livestock are affected as they consume contaminated water. This has led to a decline in his business as potential customers are wary of purchasing animals from the area.

Moses Shibambu from the Vhembe District Municipality shifts the blame to illegal connections and improper disposal of materials, causing blockages in the sewer line. He assures that the municipality will be upgrading the sewer pipeline to accommodate the increased load and flow. In the meantime, regular cleaning of the sewer line will be conducted to prevent further blockages.

The community of Mahonisi Waterval village continues to endure the consequences of the prolonged sewage spillage, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions and proactive measures from the local authorities. As residents await relief from this ongoing crisis, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together towards a resolution that prioritizes the health and well-being of the community.
