Preacher and Mason Granted Bail in Incest Case
A 40-year-old preacher and mason, Godwin Asher, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢60,000 with three sureties by the Kwabenya Circuit Court. Asher is accused of incest and causing harm to his biological daughter. He appeared in court with his counsel, Godfred Anim Darko, and pleaded not guilty to the charges. His next appearance is scheduled for September 23, 2025.
Arguments for Bail
Asher’s counsel argued that he is not a flight risk, has a fixed place of abode, and that bail should be seen as a means to allow him time to prepare his defence and access legal counsel. The court considered these arguments in granting bail.
Details of the Case
The prosecution, led by Inspector Diana Achana, stated that the victim is currently living with a relative in Pokuase, near Accra. The case came to light when a 64-year-old beautician and neighbour of the accused noticed the victim bleeding from her right palm on August 2, 2025. The victim revealed that she sustained the injury during an altercation with Asher, who allegedly forcefully took a cutlass from her.
Further investigations revealed that Asher had been engaging in sexual intercourse with the victim, with the most recent incident reported on July 30, 2025. The victim underwent medical examination and treatment following a police report.
Legal Proceedings
While the prosecution did not oppose bail, the allegations will be central to the trial proceedings. The court will navigate the balance between protecting the victim’s rights and upholding the legal principle of innocence until proven guilty as the case unfolds. Given the severity of the charges, the trial is expected to attract significant public attention.
