Lausanne | Switzerland: 04 March 2020:

Kirsty Coventry, Africa’s most decorated Olympian, is determined to provide increased funding to federations, national associations, and athletes in need to support their medal aspirations. Coventry, who benefited from an Olympic Solidarity scholarship during her athletic career, emphasizes the importance of financial support over prize money for athletes.

Reflecting on her own experience, Coventry highlights the significant role the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship played in alleviating financial pressures and enabling her to compete in crucial events. She acknowledges the scholarship’s contribution towards covering travel expenses for competitions and the presence of her coach at important championships, ultimately enhancing her performance on the global stage.

As Coventry eyes a potential presidential role within the International Olympic Committee, she emphasizes her commitment to enhancing funding programs aimed at nurturing future Olympians and champion athletes. Her focus lies in developing and strengthening initiatives that will empower athletes to reach their full potential and excel on the Olympic stage.

Recalling the monumental moment when she returned home to Harare after the 2004 Athens Olympics, Coventry reminisces about the overwhelming support and celebration she received from her community. This experience solidified her belief in the transformative power of sports and its ability to unite people and inspire future generations.

With aspirations to become the first female African president of the International Olympic Committee, Coventry is driven by a vision to leverage the unifying force of sports in a world marked by division and discord. She envisions sports as a catalyst for positive change, emphasizing the importance of inspiring and empowering the youth to create a more inclusive and harmonious society.
