The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently wrapped up a successful Senior Supervisors Commanders’ Workshop in Nairobi on May 29 and 30, 2025, as part of their preparations for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN). The workshop, led by Dr. Christian Emeruwa, Head of CAF’s Safety and Security Department, brought together 40 senior security personnel from various governmental agencies.

The focus of the training was on enhancing stadium safety and security measures in preparation for the upcoming football tournament. Dr. Emeruwa emphasized the importance of specialized security requirements for sporting events, highlighting that traditional policing methods may not always be suitable for managing large-scale tournaments.

Dr. Emeruwa expressed satisfaction with the participants, commending their receptiveness to the training and their positive attitude towards learning the specific security protocols required for football events. He underscored the significance of aligning security stakeholders with CAF’s approach to security management in football.

The workshop included a practical session at Nyayo National Stadium, a key venue for CHAN 2024, where participants received hands-on training in crowd control techniques and managing spectator entry processes. This hands-on experience aimed to equip security personnel with the necessary skills to ensure a safe and enjoyable tournament experience for fans, players, and officials.

The Nairobi workshop is part of a series of training sessions held in Tanzania and Uganda, reflecting a collaborative regional effort to uphold international safety standards for CHAN 2024. Future training opportunities will cover a range of specialized security operations, including steward training, private security operations, and hotel and airport security operations.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and local security agencies are working closely with CAF to ensure that all security preparations adhere to international standards. By prioritizing safety and security measures, the organizers aim to create a secure environment for all participants and spectators during the championship.
