Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been given the green light to return to action after serving an anti-doping ban, as confirmed by the SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) on Monday.
Rabada had tested positive for a recreational drug during the SA20 competition in February, leading to his early departure from the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament in April and subsequent one-month suspension.
In a statement released by SAIDS, it was announced that Rabada is now eligible to play for the Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL tournament. Additionally, he will also be available to represent the Proteas in the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia in London.
The statement highlighted Rabada’s acceptance of responsibility for the doping offence and his compliance with the provisional suspension. Following the completion of a substance abuse treatment program, Rabada’s suspension was lifted, allowing him to resume his sporting activities.
Expressing remorse for his actions, Rabada issued an apology last week, acknowledging the disappointment he caused to those affected by his suspension. He emphasized his gratitude for the opportunity to play cricket and vowed to not take the privilege for granted.
As for Rabada’s return to competitive cricket, he has been cleared to participate in the Gujarat Titans’ IPL match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday. Reports suggest that Rabada has already returned to India and is likely to be included in the team’s lineup.
Having played only two matches for the Titans before his suspension, Rabada aims to make a strong comeback and contribute to his team’s success. In his previous IPL appearances this season, he managed to secure two wickets with an average of 41.50 and a strike rate of 10.37.
With his ban lifted and a fresh opportunity to showcase his talent, Rabada is eager to make a positive impact on the field and redeem himself after a challenging period. The cricketing world awaits his return with anticipation as he prepares to resume his cricketing journey.
