How to Prevent and Treat Dry Winter Skin: Expert Tips For Moisture

Winter can bring about many joys, like the crisp air, cozy wardrobe, and the magic of snowfall. However, for many people, including myself, winter also brings about dry, flaky skin. According to a recent survey, 83 percent of Americans report that their skin feels different in the winter compared to other seasons, with 60 percent describing their skin as “unhealthy” during the colder months due to dryness, itchiness, and redness.

To address this common winter woe, I consulted with board-certified dermatologists Dr. Anna Chacon, MD, of Miami Derm, and Dr. Tess Mauricio, MD, CEO of M Beauty Clinic. They shared insights on the causes of dry skin in winter and tips on how to prevent and treat it effectively.

Signs of dry winter skin go beyond just roughness and flakiness. Other indicators include itching, tightness, increased sensitivity, and even light burning when applying skincare products. These symptoms can be exacerbated by the low humidity levels in winter air, which strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.

In addition to environmental factors, daily habits like taking hot showers and baths can further dry out the skin, as can indoor heaters that reduce humidity levels. To combat dry winter skin, it’s essential to adopt a skincare routine that focuses on hydration and protection.

Dr. Mauricio recommends limiting shower time to five or 10 minutes with lukewarm water, as hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also crucial for maintaining skin moisture levels from the inside out.

When it comes to moisturizing, Dr. Chacon suggests using thick, ultra-emollient ointments and creams that provide a protective barrier for the skin. Ingredients like urea, ceramides, and shea butter can help hydrate and soothe dry skin. Don’t forget to moisturize your lips as well to prevent chapping.

To lock in moisture, apply a rich, fragrance-free moisturizer immediately after cleansing to restore the skin barrier. Gentle cleansers that preserve the skin’s natural oils are also recommended, along with gentle exfoliation once a week to remove dead skin cells without over-drying the skin.

Using a humidifier at home can help add moisture to the air and counteract the effects of dry winter weather on the skin. By following these expert tips and making a few simple adjustments to your skincare routine, you can keep dry winter skin at bay and enjoy a healthy, hydrated complexion all season long. During the winter months, the cold and dry air can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving it dehydrated and uncomfortable. Dr. Mauricio recommends using a portable humidifier to help maintain moisture in the air, especially while you sleep. This can prevent your skin from becoming dehydrated and keep it looking healthy and radiant.

But what about when you’re on the go? You don’t have to stay cooped up indoors next to your humidifier all winter. Dr. Chacon suggests carrying an atomizer or spray with you to give your skin a quick dose of moisture throughout the day. This can help quench your skin’s thirst and keep it hydrated even when you’re out and about.

In addition to moisturizing on the go, it’s important to protect your skin from the harsh winter elements. Dr. Mauricio recommends accessorizing with gloves and scarves to minimize exposure to cold wind. Not only will this help keep your skin protected, but it’s also a great excuse to treat yourself to a cozy cashmere scarf for the holidays.

In conclusion, winter is coming for your skin, but with a few simple tweaks to your skincare routine and daily habits, you can keep dryness, flakiness, itchiness, and redness at bay. Look for gentle, hydrating ingredients in your cleansers and moisturizers, use a humidifier at home if possible, and don’t forget to protect your skin from the bitter chill. By taking these steps, you can ensure that dry, flaky skin is a thing of the past.
