A courageous father has been hailed as a hero after disrupting a brazen daylight robbery attempt at a jewelry store in Bendigo Marketplace. CCTV footage captured the dramatic moment when Anthony Haby, 31, tackled a would-be thief armed with a hammer and performed a citizen’s arrest.

The incident unfolded as Anthony and his partner, Jane Fleming, were shopping in the marketplace when they heard screams and what sounded like gunshots coming from Stearns Showcase Jewelers. Without hesitation, Anthony rushed into the store and confronted the man in his 20s who was smashing open glass display cases with a hammer in an alleged robbery attempt.

In the video, Anthony can be seen bravely tackling the suspect to the ground and pinning him down while Jane helped store staff exit the premises. Police and security arrived shortly after to assist Anthony, who then comforted the shaken staff members.

Despite being praised for his heroic actions, Anthony humbly stated that he was just an everyday person doing what needed to be done. Store Manager Cheryl Luvara expressed gratitude towards Anthony and nominated him for a bravery award.

The alleged offender appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates court and has been remanded in custody until August. Meanwhile, the jewelry store took to Facebook to update customers on the incident and express their gratitude towards Anthony for his courageous intervention.

The post highlighted the bravery and selflessness of the hero who stepped in to assist until the police arrived. The management team and staff at Bendigo Marketplace were also commended for their swift action and support during the challenging situation.
