Despite facing allegations of alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct, Pete Hegseth, the nominee for Secretary of Defense, is in a better political position according to aides and allies of Donald Trump. Recent leaks suggested that Trump had a contingency plan to replace Hegseth with Gov. Ron DeSantis, but the president-elect has expressed support for Hegseth publicly.

While some Republican senators have raised concerns about the allegations against Hegseth, Trump’s advisers remain optimistic as key senators have not outright rejected his nomination. Trump’s public support on social media and at events like the FOX Nation Patriot Awards have bolstered Hegseth’s position.

Trump’s Vice Presidential nominee, JD Vance, has also voiced support for Hegseth, emphasizing that they are committed to seeing his nomination through. Trump is expected to further express his support for Hegseth in upcoming media appearances.

Meanwhile, Hegseth has been actively engaging with the media to defend himself, with his mother even appearing on television to vouch for his character. Trump’s allies are closely monitoring the stance of key senators, particularly female Republicans, who have yet to make a decision on Hegseth’s nomination.

Senator Joni Ernst has been vocal in her skepticism of Hegseth, prompting a pressure campaign from the right. However, Ernst has denied any ulterior motives and stated that she is focused on ensuring a thorough vetting process for Hegseth.

Despite the controversy surrounding his nomination, Hegseth remains determined to fight for his confirmation. Trump’s advisers believe that if Hegseth makes it to a committee hearing, he will likely survive the scrutiny. However, there is a recognition that another withdrawal from a Trump nominee would generate negative publicity for the administration.

Overall, Trump’s allies are hopeful that Hegseth will overcome the challenges he faces and secure the position of Secretary of Defense.
