Health and medicine enthusiasts can now get their daily fix of news with STAT’s free newsletter Morning Rounds. Sign up to receive the latest updates on weekdays.

In the latest issue of the newsletter, it was announced that Sarah Todd, the talented editor behind many of the headline puns, will be moving into a reporter role at STAT. She will be covering the commercial determinants of health, and the team is excited to read her stories and work with editor Karen Pennar going forward.

One of the featured articles in the newsletter explored the potential link between concussions, herpes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers conducted experiments with brain tissue models made with neural stem cells, some of which carried dormant herpes virus DNA. When the models were jolted to simulate a concussion, the virus was reactivated, leading to the development of Alzheimer’s markers. This groundbreaking research has significant implications for understanding the connection between traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases.

Another study highlighted in the newsletter focused on the impact of antidepressants and other drugs on breast milk composition. The research found that protein and fat levels were lower in breast milk from mothers who took SSRIs and anti-inflammatory drugs, raising questions about the implications for infant health. Additionally, a separate study revealed higher rates of severe maternal morbidity among pregnant people with opioid use disorder on Medicaid, emphasizing the need for further research and support for this vulnerable population.

In an interview with departing FDA commissioner Robert Califf, concerns were raised about the future of the agency under the incoming administration. Califf expressed worries about potential changes and defended the FDA’s record under his leadership. The newsletter also highlighted the lack of representation of East Asian Americans in top biotech leadership positions, shedding light on disparities in the industry.

Furthermore, the newsletter discussed the limited availability of screening tests for most cancers, emphasizing the importance of investing in innovative diagnostic tools. The issue also featured a compilation of recommended reads, including articles on medical debt, genetic revenue sharing, and diversifying grant recipient institutions.

Overall, the latest issue of Morning Rounds provides a comprehensive overview of key developments in the health and medicine field, offering valuable insights and thought-provoking discussions for readers.
