The discovery of a third underground lab in Standerton has sent shockwaves through the community, as authorities uncover machinery and chemicals believed to be used in drug production. This latest find comes just one month after two other laboratories and a warehouse containing illicit substances were unearthed in the same town.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) led the operation to uncover the clandestine lab, with support from local law enforcement agencies. The authorities worked tirelessly to keep the three sites secure as active crime scenes until a cleaning company, assisted by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, Standerton police, and Hawks Supply Chain Management, could clean and decontaminate the areas.

Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi revealed that the breakthrough in this latest discovery came when information surfaced about an entrance to an underground laboratory hidden beneath a shipping container. The Hawks swiftly investigated the lead and successfully located the underground entrance, where they found machinery, drums, and containers filled with suspicious substances.

While the exact value of the seized chemicals and equipment is still under investigation, the authorities are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of the community. The scene is currently being guarded by police officers to allow for further analysis by the Forensic Science Laboratory (Chemistry).

Major General Nico Gerber commended the investigative team for their diligence in uncovering this latest drug manufacturing operation. He emphasized the Hawks’ commitment to dismantling criminal enterprises and associated structures, leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

In a previous raid, six Mozambican suspects were arrested in connection with the first lab discovery, while two South African individuals were apprehended following the second lab bust. All eight suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues. Additionally, in April 2025, law enforcement seized eleven vehicles, including high-end luxury cars, and millions of rands in connection with the illicit drug operation.

The community of Standerton remains on high alert as authorities work tirelessly to root out drug manufacturing operations and ensure the safety and security of all residents. The discovery of the third underground lab serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies to combat this pervasive issue.
