A special police team dedicated to combating illegal mining has successfully intercepted and seized four excavators in Akani, located in the Western Region of Ghana. Two of the excavators were being escorted by armed individuals suspected to be military personnel.
The operation was carried out based on credible intelligence received by the Director of Special Operations at Police Headquarters, ACP Eric Asiedu. The information indicated suspicious movement of heavy-duty mining equipment outside the Samreboï Township. Led by ASP Mr. Adorye, the police team proceeded to a location where they intercepted two low-bed trucks, each transporting an excavator.
Prior to this interception, the team had conducted a raid at an illegal mining site in Akani, on the outskirts of Asankragua. During the raid, nine suspects were arrested, and mining equipment used for illegal activities was seized.
This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by the police to support the vision of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in the fight against illegal mining and the protection of Ghana’s natural resources. All the seized equipment has been secured by the police.
