A horrifying incident unfolded in Pueblo County on Monday, as a Fort Collins man, Shane McSwane, was apprehended by deputies for allegedly carjacking and kidnapping an Aurora woman. The dramatic chase along Interstate 25 came to a close when law enforcement officers strategically intercepted McSwane’s vehicle, causing it to spin out and come to a halt.
McSwane, 28, now faces a slew of serious charges including second-degree kidnapping, aggravated robbery, unlawful sexual contact, second-degree motor vehicle theft, felony menacing with a deadly weapon, vehicular eluding, reckless driving, and driving under restraint. The swift actions of the Pueblo County deputies led to the safe rescue of the abducted woman, who had endured hours of terror at the hands of McSwane.
The harrowing ordeal began when the victim, whose car matched the description of the one involved in a gas station robbery, was forced into her vehicle by McSwane near Interstate 225 and Interstate 70 in Aurora. Over the course of several hours, McSwane subjected the woman to inappropriate sexual comments and actions, causing immense distress and fear.
The situation escalated when Pueblo deputies responded to reports of a robbery at a gas station in Colorado City, only to realize that the suspect had fled in a gray 2020 Ford Escape – the same vehicle linked to the kidnapping. With the victim’s mother alerting authorities to her daughter’s abduction and the GPS signal placing them in close proximity, a high-speed pursuit ensued.
After a tense chase spanning multiple miles, law enforcement officers managed to halt McSwane’s vehicle, apprehend him at gunpoint, and secure the release of the unharmed victim from the back of the car. McSwane now awaits a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, where he will face the gravity of his alleged crimes.
