A recent joint operation led by the Mankranso District Police Command and the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly has made significant strides in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the Mpasaaso and Achiase communities. The operation, which took place on Monday, June 2, 2025, aimed to crack down on illegal mining activities in the Ashanti Region.

During the operation, several illegal mining sites were targeted, resulting in the seizure of five heavy excavators and multiple firearms. The miners, upon sighting the security team, fled the area, leaving behind equipment and weapons. Among the items uncovered were one CAL 9mm pistol loaded with 3 rounds of live ammunition, four pump-action guns, twelve live BB cartridges, five live AA cartridges, and five excavators. The excavators have been impounded and secured at the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly premises, while the weapons and ammunition are in the custody of the Mankranso District Police Command for further investigations.

Authorities suspect that the illegal miners may have had armed protection, highlighting the involvement of criminal networks in illegal mining activities. This raises concerns about the environmental degradation and water pollution caused by galamsey in Ghana’s forest zones.

The Regional Police Command has commended all officers and stakeholders involved in the successful operation and urged the public to provide credible information to aid in the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in illegal mining activities. The operation aligns with the ongoing national efforts to combat galamsey and protect Ghana’s natural resources.

The raid serves as a reminder of the importance of surveillance and tactical interventions in identified galamsey hotspots across the country. It underscores the collective responsibility of government, security agencies, and the public in addressing the detrimental effects of illegal mining on the environment and communities.

In conclusion, the joint operation led by the Mankranso District Police Command and the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly is a significant step towards curbing illegal mining activities in the Ashanti Region. It reflects the commitment of local authorities to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and combat the environmental degradation caused by galamsey.
