The Meadowlands community in Soweto was left in shock after a terrifying robbery took place at the popular Ka Star tavern over the weekend, resulting in five people being shot and several others left traumatized. The incident, which occurred around 9.30pm, has shaken the tight-knit community to its core.

Lawrence Khumalo, the owner of Ka Star tavern, described the harrowing events that unfolded that night. He received a frantic call from his wife, alerting him to the sound of gunshots outside the premises. Upon arriving at the scene, Khumalo was met with a scene of chaos, with blood and bodies scattered both inside and outside the tavern.

The robbery was carried out by four armed men who posed as customers looking to purchase alcohol. Two of the suspects entered the tavern while the other two remained outside as lookouts. They brandished pistols, demanded cash from the till, and proceeded to steal bottles of whiskey and ciders. The patrons were then ordered to lie down as the robbers rifled through their pockets, taking phones and wallets.

Tragically, five people were shot during the ordeal, with two others sustaining minor injuries from being pistol-whipped. Among the victims were members of Khumalo’s local soccer club. Despite the police launching an investigation, no arrests have been made yet.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko of the SA Police Service confirmed that a case of business robbery and five counts of attempted murder had been opened. The community, known for frequenting the tavern on weekends, is now gripped by fear and uncertainty following the violent attack.

Nomsa Makhathini, a resident living near the tavern, expressed the shock and disbelief felt by the community in the aftermath of the robbery. Ka Star tavern was considered a safe and familiar space for locals, making the violent incident all the more unsettling.

Lawrence Khumalo, who has operated the business for years, voiced his concern over the impact of the robbery on his establishment and the community at large. The sense of fear and unease lingering in the aftermath has made running the tavern a daunting task.

As the investigation continues and the community grapples with the aftermath of the robbery, the sense of safety and security that once characterized Ka Star tavern has been shattered. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability faced by businesses and patrons in the face of violent crime.
