The Southern Region Assembly convened for its 23rd regular meeting on February 12 in Mendefera, focusing on the theme of “Conservation of Resources: Cornerstone for Economic Development.” Mr. Wolday Gebre, Chairman of the Regional Assembly, emphasized the importance of public awareness and participation in national development programs, urging assembly members to collaborate closely with the public to address existing challenges.
During the meeting, the Governor of the region, along with department and branch heads and national associations, provided comprehensive updates on the progress of development programs in 2024. Key discussions revolved around expanding social service institutions, establishing a regional museum, enhancing the economic capacity of sports activities, and tightening control over cross-border trade in agricultural and veterinary medicines and chemical fertilizers.
Looking ahead to 2025, Mr. Habteab Tesfatsion, Governor of the region, outlined key priorities such as water and soil conservation, completing the construction of dams and micro-dams, developing a master plan for the semi-urban center of Mai-Mine, and setting up kindergartens in all public institutions.
After a thorough review of the reports presented, the assembly adopted several recommendations. These included the establishment of training centers for youth involved in innovation and creative activities, promoting the use of organic fertilizers among farmers, and intensifying efforts to ensure access to nutritious food.
Overall, the meeting highlighted the region’s commitment to sustainable development and resource management. The assembly’s discussions and decisions underscored the importance of collaboration between government officials, community leaders, and the public to drive economic growth and social progress in the Southern Region of Eritrea.
