The race for the next President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is heating up as seven candidates presented their visions at the Olympic House on Thursday, 30 January. Despite the in-camera nature of the meeting, the candidates seemed confident in their campaign pitches.

Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan, the first candidate to address the media, emphasized the need for transparency in the election process. He highlighted key areas of focus, such as inspiring imagination, ensuring integrity, and developing inclusion within the Olympic Movement.

Each candidate shared their perspectives on various issues facing the IOC. Mr. David Lappartient discussed the possibility of Russia’s return to the Olympic Movement and proposed hosting the Olympic Games in Africa. He also highlighted the challenges of climate change and digitalization.

Mr. Johan Eliasch highlighted his track record in leading international corporations and emphasized the importance of empowering IOC members. He also addressed the issue of Russia’s suspension and the need to engage sponsors effectively.

Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch emphasized the need for a new model for the bidding process of Olympic Games hosts and a stronger relationship with the media. He highlighted the importance of engaging young people and utilizing technology to ensure the future of the Olympic Movement.

Mrs. Kirsty Coventry shared her personal journey as an athlete and the power of sport in bringing communities together. She discussed the importance of supporting African athletes and creating a safe and inclusive environment for women athletes.

Lord Sebastian Coe emphasized the need to engage with young people and adapt to the changing digital landscape. He highlighted the challenges of sustaining IOC revenue and the importance of reviewing election rules for future candidates.

Mr. Morinari Watanabe proposed hosting the Olympic Games in five cities on five continents simultaneously to reduce financial burdens and increase broadcast opportunities. He also envisioned transforming the IOC into a World Sports Organization to drive global transformation through sports.

Each candidate presented unique perspectives and ideas for the future of the IOC. As the election date approaches, the IOC membership will have a crucial decision to make in selecting the next President to lead the organization into a new era of growth and development.
