Authorities in North West have launched a manhunt following the tragic murder of an elderly couple in the parking lot of a Shopping Centre in Rustenburg on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports, the elderly couple was shot dead after a confrontation with the occupants of a white Kia Rio without number plates. Paramedics arrived at the scene but declared both victims dead.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. They can contact Lieutenant Colonel Mainganyo Nathaniël Phatsoane on 082 373 9571 or Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Murunwa on 082 772 599.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, condemned the senseless violence and called on the perpetrator(s) to surrender to the authorities.

Crime Patterns in South Africa

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu recently presented the country’s crime statistics, revealing a decrease in murders from January to March 2025 compared to the same period last year. However, arguments, misunderstandings, road rage, and provocation remain top causative factors for violent crimes.

Retaliation, revenge, and punishment were cited as reasons in many murder cases, highlighting the need for conflict resolution and community support programs. The statistics also showed a concerning trend of murders and attempted murders occurring in public places.

Law enforcement agencies are working to adapt to new crime trends and threats, aiming to increase safety and security for all citizens. It is essential for the community to come together and support efforts to combat crime and protect vulnerable individuals.
