The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) continues its commitment to gender equality with the launch of the Gender Development Centre’s (EGDC) gender programmes for Togo. The event took place on October 24, 2024, in Sokodé, Togo, with the presentation of a cheque worth USD245,000 to the Togolese Republic for the Obstetric Fistula programme. This initiative is part of ECOWAS’s efforts to support the eradication of obstetric fistula in the region.
The funding provided by ECOWAS will be allocated to four key components of the Fistula programme. These include surgical repair for women and girls suffering from obstetric fistula, socio-economic reintegration of Fistula survivors into their communities, sensitization campaigns on the causes and prevention of obstetric fistula, and the rehabilitation of national Fistula referral centers.
In her address, Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, the Commissioner of Human Development and Social Affairs of the ECOWAS Commission, emphasized the high prevalence of obstetric fistula in Togo and other West African countries. The ECOWAS Gender Development Centre aims to create resilient communities that promote gender equality through targeted activities with a strong socio-economic impact.
Professor Tchin Darre, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene of Togo, expressed gratitude for ECOWAS’s support and highlighted the need for a multisectoral approach to address the underlying causes of obstetric fistula. He also mentioned other EGDC programs such as School Scholarships, Economic Transformation, and 50 Million Women Speak, which contribute to addressing gender inequality and promoting women’s rights.
Minister of Social Affairs, Solidarity, and the Promotion of Women of Togo, Professor Kossiwa Zinsou-Klassou, stressed the importance of a holistic approach to combating obstetric fistula and called for increased resources to implement the strategic plan effectively. She commended the brave women who have sought treatment for obstetric fistula and urged them to advocate for those still suffering in silence.
The EGDC has implemented various initiatives in Togo to empower women and girls, including programs for medical and financial support, scholarships for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, economic empowerment for women in agriculture, fisheries, and crafts, and the “50 Million Women Speak” Project, which provides a platform for women to network and access information for business development.
Overall, ECOWAS’s gender programmes in Togo are making a significant impact on women’s lives and promoting gender equality in the region. The organization’s continued support and commitment to empowering women and girls are essential for building a more inclusive and equal society.
