The Dome-Kwabenya Constituency has finally reached a resolution in the dispute over its parliamentary election results. The Electoral Commission (EC) officially declared Faustina Akurugu Elikplim, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, as the duly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the area. This announcement was made during an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, 31 December, putting an end to the prolonged disagreement between the NPP and the NDC.
EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, confirmed the decision, emphasizing that the electoral process had been completed and the outcome reflected the will of the people. She stated, “Ours is to ensure that our processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld.” Despite the challenges faced by the candidates, Mensa highlighted the importance of allowing the processes to work and ensuring that the right thing is done.
After a re-collation of votes, Faustina Akurugu Elikplim secured 50,967 votes, narrowly defeating the NPP’s candidate, Mike Oquaye Junior, who obtained 50,669 votes. Other candidates received a minimal number of votes, with a total of 102,158 valid votes and 624 rejected ballots out of 102,782 votes cast. The Returning Officer for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, James Zakaria Kofi, formally declared Akurugu as the MP-elect, solidifying her victory and canceling the planned re-run at the outstanding polling station.
This decision marks a significant victory for the NDC in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, as Faustina Akurugu Elikplim prepares to assume her role as the Member of Parliament. The resolution brings closure to the contentious election and paves the way for a new chapter in the constituency’s representation in Parliament.
