Dr. Justice Yankson, a former Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has called on the media to uphold their responsibility to protect Ghana’s integrity and peace, especially during politically tense periods.
During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr. Yankson emphasised the importance of journalists prioritising national interests over political affiliations. He highlighted the crucial role of the media in preventing negative political narratives from destabilising the country, citing examples from other nations where media actions have had detrimental effects.
Dr. Yankson urged journalists to exercise caution in their reporting, urging them to refrain from amplifying unsubstantiated and biased allegations that could incite discord. He expressed concern over the emergence of “NPP media” and “NDC media” in Ghana’s journalism landscape, noting that such political polarisation could have severe consequences for all citizens.
The former GMA vice president called on the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to take a firm stance against content that threatens social cohesion. He stressed that journalists have a national duty to ensure that the information they disseminate is factual, credible, and contributes positively to the nation’s well-being.
In conclusion, Dr. Yankson urged the media to filter out misinformation and focus on promoting unity and understanding among Ghanaians. By upholding journalistic integrity and objectivity, the media can play a critical role in safeguarding Ghana’s stability and progress.
