The collaboration between The Walt Disney Company Africa and Reach For A Dream has resulted in the creation of the latest Dream Room for children and young people in hospitals. The Disney Dream Room was officially unveiled at Pholosong Regional Hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 13 November, with representatives from both organizations, the Gauteng Department of Health, hospital management and staff, and a special appearance by Mickey Mouse himself.
This Dream Room is the 45th one to be created through the Reach For A Dream initiative and is located in paediatric ward 6B of Pholosong Regional Hospital. The hospital serves up to 10,000 ill children and young people from the region of KwaTsaDuza in Ekurhuleni each year. The project includes the renovation of the ward, the installation of a therapy room, and a unique garden area to provide greater therapeutic outcomes and dignified healthcare for patients during their most vulnerable times.
The Disney Dream Room features beloved characters and worlds from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars incorporated throughout the space. This includes unique mural artwork, therapy aides, and a playful garden area, creating opportunities for patients and their families to experience “Moments that Matter” when they need it the most.
Christine Service, Senior Vice President and General Manager of The Walt Disney Company Africa, expressed the company’s commitment to bringing joy and peace of mind to children in challenging times. The Disney Dream Room is a reflection of this commitment, using storytelling and characters to inspire and create positive experiences for children facing serious illnesses.
Natalie Lazaris, Head of Fundraising for Reach For A Dream, highlighted the impact of the Disney Dream Room in providing moments of joy and hope to children during difficult times. The partnership between Disney Africa and Reach For A Dream aims to lift spirits and nurture hope for young patients and their families.
Dr. Mkhulu Selepe, representing the MEC of The Department of Health, commended the partnership between the public and private sectors in creating a space that heals hearts and uplifts spirits for every child who enters its doors.
Dream Rooms like the Disney Dream Room transform hospital wards into joyful spaces, providing a sanctuary for children enduring lengthy hospital stays. These rooms are designed to nurture imagination, play, and learning, contributing to the emotional and mental well-being of the children.
In addition to the Disney Dream Room, Disney and Reach For A Dream have collaborated on wish fulfillment for beneficiaries of the non-profit organizations through gifting and experiences. To learn more about The Walt Disney Company’s social purpose programs and partnerships, visit their website.
