Former Premier League referee David Coote has recently shared his personal struggles that eventually led to his dismissal by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The 42-year-old referee, who officiated over 100 Premier League matches, opened up about the pressures, fear of abuse related to his sexuality, and personal tragedies that played a role in his actions.

In a candid interview, Coote admitted to facing challenges with his self-esteem and identity as a gay man, which he had kept hidden for a significant part of his life. He revealed the difficulties he encountered in coming out to his parents and friends, emphasizing the impact of hiding his sexuality on his behavior and mental well-being.

The fear of being openly gay in the football industry, coupled with the abuse he faced throughout his career, added to the emotional strain that Coote experienced. He acknowledged that the abuse he received as a referee, combined with the thought of adding his sexuality to the mix, made the situation even more challenging for him.

Additionally, Coote disclosed that he turned to substance use as a coping mechanism to escape from the pressures of his job, particularly following personal losses like his mother’s passing and his uncle’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease. While he denied being dependent on substances, he admitted that they provided a temporary reprieve from the stress of his career.

Despite the ongoing investigations by the FA regarding allegations of agreeing to issue a yellow card for financial gain, which he denies, and a UEFA probe into a video showing him allegedly using cocaine during the Euro 2024 tournament, Coote is actively seeking therapy and working towards rebuilding his life.

Reflecting on his career and the events that led to his dismissal, Coote expressed regret but emphasized his commitment to improving his physical and mental well-being. He acknowledged his past mistakes but stated his dedication to becoming the best version of himself moving forward.

As Coote navigates through the aftermath of his dismissal and the ongoing inquiries, he remains focused on personal growth and self-improvement. Despite the challenges he has faced, he is determined to learn from his experiences and strive towards a better future.
