The police are facing challenges in identifying a suspect in the case of a seven-year-old girl who was allegedly raped at her school in Matatiele in October last year. The investigation has hit several snags, including evidence gaps and the victim’s illness, which have hindered progress in the case.

A special meeting with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police was held to discuss the #JusticeForCwecwe case, which has sparked national outrage. Parliamentarians expressed their dissatisfaction with the handling of the case.

Police Investigation Challenges

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola emphasized that the police were involved in the case from the beginning, as a case was opened at Matatiele Police Station on 16 October 2024. However, the lack of clear evidence and statements from the victim has complicated the investigation.

The case was deemed complex, leading to the appointment of Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele to head the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Investigations (FCS) unit. Since then, the investigation has progressed with 30 statements taken from various individuals involved in the case.

Bergview College Principal Not a Person of Interest

Despite collecting DNA samples from individuals of interest, the police have not identified any suspects. Bergview College principal Jaco Pieterse is not considered a person of interest in the case, as investigators did not collect his DNA due to his absence from the junior school campus where the incident occurred.

Challenges Causing Delays

Challenges in the investigation include difficulties in accessing the victim for additional statements and psycho-social support due to her illness. The forensic social worker appointed in October 2024 has been unable to assist fully, as the victim’s mother needs to confirm when they can meet in a conducive environment.

The police are committed to thorough investigation and accountability for any shortcomings identified in the case. Despite delays, efforts are being made to ensure justice for the victim.

The national police commissioner assured that the case would be investigated thoroughly, and he welcomed the national #JusticeForCwecwe protests as a demonstration of community activism against such crimes.
