Disgraced CPS Teacher Sentenced to 25 Years for Sexual Abuse of Students
Andrew Castro, a former physical education teacher at Federico Garcia Lorca Elementary School in Avondale, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually abusing and assaulting young male students. The 38-year-old Castro pleaded guilty to charges including predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under 13, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and exploitation of a child under 13.
Castro, who had formed close relationships with the victims’ families through the boys’ sporting events, began engaging in inappropriate behavior with two brothers, aged 8 to 11 at the time. The abuse escalated over the years, with Castro using a dice game as a pretext for sexual acts. In 2020, he sexually assaulted one of the boys, leading to his arrest.
A lawsuit filed on behalf of the victims was settled for $2 million, with each boy receiving $444,444.44. The lawsuit alleged that Castro’s behavior was known to school officials, but parents were not informed, allowing the abuse to continue unchecked. The victims’ parents only became aware of the abuse after one of the boys harmed himself and confided in a relative.
Despite attempts to cover up the abuse, Castro was ultimately held accountable and sentenced to consecutive prison terms. He is required to register as a sex offender for life and submit DNA to a law enforcement database.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance and transparency in safeguarding children from predators within educational institutions. It serves as a reminder of the need for strong policies and protocols to prevent and address instances of sexual abuse in schools.
