The Springboks and their esteemed coach, Rassie Erasmus, were honored at a prestigious award ceremony in Cape Town, where two-time World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe was crowned as the SA Rugby Player of the Year for the 2024 season. Kolbe’s exceptional performance on the field set him apart from his fellow nominees, including Pieter-Steph du Toit, Damian de Allende, Eben Etzebeth, and Ox Nche.
Du Toit, who was recognized as the World Rugby Player of the Year in the previous season, was among the contenders for the coveted title. Kolbe’s win marks a significant achievement as he becomes the first backline player since Jean de Villiers in 2013 to receive this prestigious award.
Expressing his gratitude, Kolbe humbly stated, “It’s massive… I need to pinch myself. Seeing all the names of the people who’ve lifted up this trophy has motivated me through my career.” He credited his teammates and coaches for believing in him and allowing him to don the Springbok jersey.
Kolbe played a pivotal role in the Springboks’ triumphant season, where they clinched victory in 11 out of 13 Tests and secured the Rugby Championship title. As a result of their outstanding performance, the team was named Team of the Year, with coach Rassie Erasmus receiving the Coach of the Year accolade.
SA Rugby president Mark Alexander commended Kolbe’s exceptional skills, dedication, and impact on the field, stating, “He truly embodies the spirit of excellence that defines South African rugby.” Additionally, Springbok women’s backline star Nadine Roos was recognized as the best women’s player in 2024.
The awards ceremony also celebrated emerging talent in the sport, with Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu being named Young Player of the Year and Jurenzo Julius receiving the title of Junior Springbok Player of the Year. In the Sevens category, Selvyn Davids was honored as the standout player of the season.
Furthermore, players from the Currie Cup rugby leagues, including Renzo du Plessis, Ashlon Davids, and Jakkie Davids, were acknowledged for their exceptional performances in their respective divisions.
