Chelsea Football Club has made headlines with the recent double signing of Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon, in a combined transfer deal worth £62.5 million ($81 million). Sporting Lisbon confirmed the transfers, with Quenda, a 17-year-old winger, joining Chelsea for just under £44 million, while Essugo, a 20-year-old defensive midfielder, was signed for £18.5 million.
Quenda, who was also a target for Manchester United, will remain at Sporting until the end of the next season before making the move to Stamford Bridge. On the other hand, Essugo will complete the current campaign on loan at La Liga club Las Palmas before linking up with Chelsea.
These signings are in line with Chelsea’s strategy of investing in promising young talent, following previous deals for 17-year-olds Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez, who are set to join the club in the upcoming season.
Quenda, who has already featured for Sporting’s first team, made his Champions League debut in September and scored his first league goal against Famalicao in October. Essugo, known for his solid performances in a defensive midfield role, is expected to provide valuable depth to Chelsea’s squad, potentially serving as backup to Moises Caicedo.
Under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea continues to invest heavily in young prospects as part of their long-term squad building strategy. Currently sitting in fourth place in the Premier League, Chelsea is in contention for a spot in the Champions League, and these new signings reflect their ambition for future success on both the domestic and European fronts.
The club’s commitment to nurturing and developing young talent is evident in their recent acquisitions, showcasing their dedication to building a strong and competitive team for the seasons to come.
